Salon Marketing Tip: Know Your Audience

The very first rule of marketing and advertising is this: you can’t market to everyone. A very simple rule that many struggle to follow. If you are working to build a strong clientele for your salon, or maybe as an individual stylist, you need to know your audience. More importantly, you need to clearly identify what services you are good at, and then identify the clientele that fits those services.

When you identify your perfect client, you’re giving yourself more opportunities to market and advertise directly to that client. Not every client will be attracted by the same thing. For example, if you prefer to style hair for men verses coloring blondes all day, you’re going to want to have a different messaging strategy.

Of course, that’s easier said than done. So, we’ve provided a list of questions to help you identify your best type of customer. Once you figure out who that is, you can begin to tailor all your marketing towards that type of person.

This is a really fun exercise, so get a pen and paper and get to work! Questions to consider when identifying your perfect client:

  1. Are they a color or cut client?
  2. Do you cut their children’s hair?
  3. Are they male or female?
  4. What ethnicities?
  5. Where do they live?
  6. What hobbies do they have?
  7. What age range?
  8. What’s their personality like?
  9. Where do they hang out?
  10. What do they do for leisure?
